The Toms River Municipal Utilities Authority ("TRMUA" or "the Authority") recently closed on a $6.2 million loan from the New Jersey Water Bank to continue improving its sanitary sewer system. The project focuses on rehabilitating about four and a half miles of sewer pipes and manholes throughout the system using a Cured-In-Place Lining process. This modern method reinforces existing pipes from the inside, extending their lifespan without the need for full replacement.
In addition to the pipe and manhole rehabilitation, TRMUA will upgrade essential equipment such as replacing outdated emergency generators at several pump stations and upgrading the generator at its administrative building. The Authority is also assessing and planning structural improvements for one of its older pump station buildings to ensure it remains safe and functional for years to come.
Although TRMUA has a strong preventative maintenance program, regular inspections continue to show that proactive upgrades are necessary to keep the system efficient and dependable. These efforts are part of the Authority's long-term Capital Improvement Program (CIP), which aims to prevent major system failures and protect nearby waterways that flow into Barnegat Bay. Since TRMUA began its rehabilitation work in 2010, treated wastewater flows have dropped by about 400 million gallons per year, a clear sign that the improvements are reducing leaks and enhancing system performance. Through ongoing investment in infrastructure, TRMUA continues to deliver reliable service while protecting the environment.
