Pequannock Township recently closed on a $4.9 million loan with the New Jersey Water Bank to construct a facility that will house treatment equipment designed to remove PFAS from Wells 1 and 2. PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are a group of synthetic chemicals widely used in industrial applications and everyday consumer products such as non-stick cookware, water-resistant fabrics, and firefighting foams. These compounds persist in the environment, accumulating in soil, air, and water, and can contaminate drinking water sources, posing serious risks to human health.
Well 1 is currently offline due to PFAS concentrations exceeding the respective maximum contaminant levels (MCLs). With this well out of service, the township's water production capacity has been reduced by half, increasing reliance on bulk water purchases to meet local demand. Well 2, while still operational, also contains PFAS at levels below the MCLs and will be treated under this project. Restoring Well 1 and treating both wells will allow Pequannock Township's water system to return to optimal operation and ensure a safe, sustainable drinking water supply for residents.
