TOMS RIVER MUA SANITARY SEWER REHABILITATION

The Toms River Municipal Utilities Authority ("TRMUA") recently completed clean water improvements that are being financed with approximately $4 million in loans from the NJ Water Bank, a low-rate funding program jointly administered by the DEP and the NJ I-Bank. Total debt service savings for this project is estimated to be $1,195,090, or 30% of the total cost of the project, over the 30-year term of the loan. In addition, this project created an estimated 47 direct construction jobs. 

The TRMUA's Capital Improvement Program includes rigorous preventative maintenance and regular ongoing inspections which have revealed the necessity for upgrades and maintenance that are the subject of this project. Faulty pipes that are not conducive to trenchless rehabilitation will be excavated and replaced in 30 separate locations. Two new force mains consisting of four-inch diameter pipe were installed to supplement the existing force mains and can be activated in case of failure, preventing spills or disruption in service. The ability to alternate force mains also facilitates repairs and/or inspections on the inactive force main without service disruption.

A gravity pipe originally installed circa 1968 will be replaced with PVC and several pipes and manholes will be rehabilitated via cured-in-place lining. This project will ensure efficient operations and prevent failures that could impact surrounding water bodies which feed into Barnegat Bay

"Since the TRMUA began their aggressive rehabilitation of pipes and manholes beginning in 2010, the metered treatment flows have been consistently reduced by approximately 400 MG/Year.We appreciate the TRMUA's commitment to operate efficiently, protect the environment and to finance the program strategically through the Water Bank, saving our ratepayers financially over time."
