PVSC PLANT-WIDE WET WEATHER TREATMENT CAPACITY

The Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission (PVSC) recently completed clean water improvements that are being funded with approximately $7 million in loans from the NJ Water Bank, a joint low-rate funding program of the DEP and the NJ I-Bank. Including interest cost savings, total savings for this project is estimated to be $1.046 million over the 20-year term of the loan or 16% of the total project cost. In addition, this project created an estimated 78 direct construction jobs.  

Nine of PVSC's member municipalities own and operate combined sewer systems with combined sewer overflow discharges to the area waterways including the Passaic, Hackensack and Hudson Rivers and Newark Bay. This project was one component of PVSC's plant-wide improvements to increase its wet weather treatment capacity to reduce the volume of CSO discharges. The project included the installation of tanks, piping, and metering pumps for the construction of an intermittent use dechlorination chemical feed system for PVSC's Newark Bay Outfall.  

Hector C. Lora, Mayor of Passaic City, one of the Commission's major customers, gave the project high praise. "The reduction of combined sewer overflows is highly beneficial to our community and the environment. PVSC has always dedicated resources to maintain and upgrade its system, taking advantage of the NJ Water Bank's low-interest financing. This project is an example of the Commission improving its operations and benefitting the environment while saving its ratepayers financially over time." 

This project was designed by CH2M and constructed by Tomar Construction LLC.
