The Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission ("PVSC") recently closed on a $60.7 million loan from the NJ Water Bank to upgrade its secondary treatment process. Currently, PVSC generates oxygen for this process using a 40-year-old onsite cryogenic facility, a system that cools air to extremely low temperatures to separate out oxygen. This aging equipment has reached the end of its useful life and will be replaced with a new vapor pressure swing adsorption (VPSA) system. Unlike cryogenic systems, a VPSA system is more energy-efficient and easier to maintain because it produces oxygen by separating gases in the air using pressure changes, without the need for deep cooling.
