The North Hudson Sewerage Authority (NHSA) recently closed on a $57.5 million loan with the New Jersey Water Bank to continue two major infrastructure projects that will help reduce combined sewer overflows and improve stormwater management in northwest Hoboken.
The H6H7 project is a multi-phase sewer separation initiative serving two drainage areas in northwest Hoboken. During Phase 1, a new pumping station was constructed to support the future separated system. Phase 2 included construction of a new force main and a portion of the stormwater gravity sewer network. This latest phase will complete the installation of the new storm sewer throughout the service area and separate stormwater from the existing combined sewer system within the H6H7 drainage areas.
Separating stormwater from sanitary sewage helps reduce the risk of combined sewer overflows during heavy rainfall, preventing untreated wastewater from being discharged into the Hudson River. This improves water quality, protects aquatic ecosystems, supports safer recreational waters, increases system reliability, and enhances the community's resilience to increasingly
Because the project implements combined sewer overflow (CSO) abatement measures, the authority is expected to receive $45.5 million in principal forgiveness at long-term closing, covering approximately 80% of the total project cost if awarded as anticipated. This would substantially reduce the financial burden on the community.
