Paterson City recently closed on a $2,137,200 loan from the NJ Water Bank to address chronic flooding issues. Currently, the limited storm sewer infrastructure along West Railway Avenue is partially connected to the sanitary sewer system. However, approximately 90% of the roadways lack any stormwater collection system. As a result, the area, which includes a school, commercial and industrial properties, and some residences, experiences frequent and disruptive flooding.
Due to the persistent flooding, it is both economically and environmentally practical to construct a dedicated storm sewer system. The proposed project involves disconnecting the existing stormwater inlets from the sanitary sewer and installing a new storm sewer system along the full length of West Railway Avenue. This system will connect to the County's storm sewer infrastructure at Crooks Avenue, near the Paterson/Clifton border.
The primary objectives of the project are to separate the combined sewer system, reduce the burden on the wastewater treatment facility, and alleviate local flooding to protect public health, property, and economic activity in the area.
