The Town of Newton recently closed on a $2,541,921 loan with the New Jersey Water Bank to support two infrastructure projects designed to enhance public safety and environmental health. The first project implements drainage Improvements for Babe Ruth League Baseball Field in Memory Park. The park lacks proper drainage, resulting in saturated soils and risking public safety. The township proposes to implement a combination of gray and green infrastructure to manage stormwater more effectively. These improvements will allow for on-site treatment of stormwater discharge, ultimately protecting public health and improving the field's usability.
The second project focuses on upgrading the town's stormwater management fleet. Newton is seeking 100% principal forgiveness under the Water Bank's affordability criteria to purchase two street sweepers, one vacuum/jetter truck, two heavy-duty pickup trucks, and one dump truck. These vehicles will enhance the town's ability to clean and maintain its stormwater sewer system, helping to reduce sediment buildup and improve water quality. The equipment will be acquired through a cooperative pricing program to ensure cost efficiency.
Together, these projects demonstrate Newton's commitment to protecting public health, enhancing recreational spaces, and conserving local ecosystems.
