EDISON TOWNSHIP METER REPLACEMENT

Edison Township recently closed on an $8.8 million loan through the New Jersey Water Bank to replace water distribution system meters that have exceeded their useful life. The project includes the removal and disposal of existing meters, the installation of approximately 12,000 new water service meters throughout the Township, and the implementation of an Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) network.

AMI system is a modern, digital approach to measuring water use. Instead of requiring manual meter readings, AMI-enabled meters automatically transmit water usage data to the utility through a secure communications network.

This allows utilities to:

• Read meters remotely and more frequently,
• Detect leaks, abnormal usage, and system inefficiencies earlier
• Improve billing accuracy and reduce estimated bills
• Provide customers with better insight into their water consumption

For residents, AMI means fewer service disruptions, more accurate bills, and quicker identification of leaks that could otherwise go unnoticed. For the Township, it means better system management, reduced operational costs over time, and a more resilient and efficient water distribution system.
