The Brick Township Municipal Utilities Authority (BTMUA) recently closed a $3.56 million loan from the New Jersey Water Bank to install a Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) filtration system at its water treatment facility. This upgrade aims to reduce concentrations of PFNA, a persistent PFAS chemical used in industrial processes and consumer products, that can contaminate drinking water through soil, surface water, and groundwater.
The project will improve water quality by removing unregulated contaminants, including those identified in health advisories from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. The upgrade involves installing 12 pairs of GAC adsorption vessels, a concrete pad, an enclosure, and piping modifications to integrate the system with existing infrastructure.
