The Berkeley Township Municipal Utilities Authority ("MUA") recently closed on a $3.4 million loan through the New Jersey Water Bank to finance the installation of new water mains.
The project includes the installation of approximately 41,500 linear feet of new 8- and 12-inch cement-lined ductile iron water mains. Work will include the construction of water mains and related appurtenances, valves and valve boxes, hydrant assemblies, water service connections, and connections to existing water mains, as well as excavation, backfilling, restoration, site clearing, and other associated work.
These improvements will create additional looping within the existing distribution system, strengthening reliability and helping ensure a consistent supply of potable water for Berkeley Township residents.
Currently, the Authority's service area does not include all areas of Berkeley Township. Some residents within the service area who are not connected to the system rely on individual wells for their water supply. These wells are shallow and therefore more vulnerable to contamination without the same monitoring and treatment as water provided by the Authority.
The MUA will now expand service to more residents within its service area while reducing reliance on private wells and improving long-term reliability on the township's water system.
