JOINT MEETING OF ESSEX AND UNION COUNTIES FLOOD MITIGATION COGENERATION UPGRADE

Joint Meeting of Essex and Union Counties Flood Mitigation Cogeneration Upgrade Phase II

The Joint Meeting of Essex and Union Counties (JMEUC) recently closed on a loan with the NJ Water Bank to reduce impacts caused by natural disasters like Superstorm Sandy and to avoid loss of wastewater service. The project will promote resiliency and minimize potential service interruptions. The JMEUC proposes to protect public health and natural resources by minimizing the release of untreated sewage into the environment.

This phase of the project includes upgrades to the existing co-generation facility to power the proposed Effluent Pumping Station, two proposed stormwater pumping stations, and the existing sludge dewatering facility. Two new engine generator sets, and associated equipment will be installed in the existing co-generation facility including all required electrical and instrumental connections. A new substation will be constructed at the Sludge Dewatering Facility, and medium voltage connections will be installed to the co-generation grid. In addition, access platforms will be installed to allow for safe access to the new and existing co-generation equipment for maintenance.
