CAMDEN COUNTY MUA INTERCEPTOR & CSO REDUCTION PROJECT

NJ I-Bank Project of the Week: Camden County MUA Interceptor & CSO Reduction Project Authority Receives $8,056,643 in Water Bank Loans. Estimated Savings to ratepayers of $1,719,314.

NJ I-Bank and NJDEP Helping to Improve New Jersey's Environmental Infrastructure, One Project at a Time

The Camden County MUA (CCMUA) completed clean water improvements that are being funded with approximately $8.1 million in loans from the NJ Water Bank, a joint low-rate funding program of the DEP and the NJ I-Bank. Including interest cost savings, total savings for this project is estimated to be $1,719,314 over the 30-year term of the loan or 21% of the total project cost. In addition, this project created an estimated 96 direct construction jobs.

This project involved a modification to the wastewater treatment plant headworks. The Authority constructed 225 linear feet of 72-inch diameter interceptor that runs parallel to the existing junction chamber and connects directly to the wet well of the plant's pumping station.

The Facility's wastewater treatment plant was originally designed to accept raw sewage flow from the suburbs first, and then combined stormwater and raw sewage flow from Camden City. The new configuration bypasses the city's incoming sewer line and reconnects directly to the plant's wet well, enabling the CCMUA to treat more wet weather flow from Camden City's combined sewer overflow system.

Victor Carstarphen, Mayor of Camden City, gave the project high praise. "The reduction of combined sewer overflows is highly beneficial to our community and the environment. The CCMUA has always dedicated resources to maintain and upgrade its system, taking advantage of the NJ Water Bank's low-interest financing. This project is an example of the Authority improving its operations and benefitting the environment while saving its ratepayers financially over time."

This project was designed by PS&S Integrated Services and constructed by Northeast Remsco Construction.
