The Town of Newton recently closed on a $7 million loan from the New Jersey Water Bank for critical upgrades at its Wastewater Treatment Plant. The funding will be used to modernize the Chemical Room, rehabilitate the Sand Filter system, and replace key electrical infrastructure, including the generator transfer switch and the main electrical switch.
All three components of the project target aging infrastructure that has reached the end of its useful life. The new equipment is expected to improve operational efficiency and enhance energy performance.
Project Components:
Chemical Room Upgrades
The majority of the chemical feed system, pumps, piping, and tanks, date back to the 1990 upgrade. These components are now outdated and require replacement. The upgrade will ensure safer, more reliable chemical dosing and storage.
ABW Sand Filter Rehabilitation
Due to the age and condition of the existing sand filter system, the unit will be fully renovated. This includes addressing media loss, corrosion, and mechanical wear, particularly in the chain and sprocket assembly, to restore the system to optimal performance.
Electrical Infrastructure Replacement
Both the generator transfer switch and the main electrical switch are critical to plant operations and need immediate replacement. Upgrading these components will improve power reliability and enhance system safety during outages or load transfers.
