The Mount Laurel Township Municipal Utilities Authority (MLMUA) recently closed on a $3.4 million loan from the New Jersey Water Bank to install Programmable Logic Controller (PLC)-based monitoring systems at 27 sewage pump stations throughout Mount Laurel Township. These advanced systems use PLCs to automate, monitor, and control pump station operations, critical infrastructure that supports water supply, wastewater, and stormwater management. Engineered for precision, reliability, and real-time response, PLC-based systems represent a major step forward in operational efficiency and environmental protection.
Many of the pump stations targeted for upgrades are equipped with control systems that are over 20 years old and increasingly prone to failure. In several cases, replacement parts are no longer available, making maintenance both difficult and costly. Proactive rehabilitation of this aging infrastructure will not only enhance system reliability but also help prevent potential environmental damage and avoid costly permit violations.
