MIDDLESEX COUNTY UTILITIES AUTHORITY CTP REHAB PHASE 6

The Middlesex County Utilities Authority (MCUA) recently closed on a $107,295,018 loan through the New Jersey Water Bank to fund critical upgrades at its Central Treatment Plant (CTP).

The investment supports a series of infrastructure improvements, including:

• Aerated Grit Chamber Enhancements: Replacement of the grit removal system and installation of a new odor control unit.
• New Septage Receiving Facility: Construction of a fully enclosed facility with equipment housing, office space, pump station, force main, and odor control systems.
• Incoming Substation Rehabilitation: Replacement and upgrade of key high-voltage switches and breakers to ensure uninterrupted electric service.
• Influent Screen Installation: New screens for the primary tanks and Total Toxic Organics (TTO) piping repairs to improve processing efficiency. TTO piping refers to the infrastructure related to monitoring or managing organic compounds that are considered toxic. It is a regulated parameter under EPA and includes a long list of specific toxic organic chemicals, such as benzene, toluene, and chlorinated solvents.

These upgrades will help MCUA maintain compliance with effluent water quality permits, reduce solids entering the treatment process, and improve the quality of biosolids sent to the Middlesex County Landfill. Reliable electric distribution will also minimize the risk of system outages that could result in permit violations.
