The City of Margate recently closed on a $3.5 million loan from the NJ Water Bank to launch a comprehensive lead service line replacement program. The initiative aims to eliminate all lead and galvanized service lines citywide, significantly improving public health while aligning with state and federal mandates.
Lead is a toxic metal with no safe level of exposure particularly harmful to fetuses, infants, and young children. Even low exposure can result in permanent cognitive harm, learning delays, and behavioral problems. In adults, long-term exposure has been linked to high blood pressure, kidney damage, reproductive issues, and increased cardiovascular risk. By replacing these hazardous pipes, the project will deliver lasting benefits, including cleaner drinking water, reduced healthcare costs, and greater environmental justice for all residents.
