Cape May City recently closed on two loans totaling $6.3 million from the NJ Water Bank to upgrade its aging water and sewer infrastructure.
The first loan, through the Clean Water Program, will fund the replacement of approximately 6,260 linear feet of sanitary sewer main and 143 sanitary sewer service connections. The project also includes full restoration of asphalt roadways and concrete curbing. The area is currently served by deteriorating sewer lines composed of vitrified clay and asbestos-cement pipe, which are prone to corrosion, collapse, and groundwater infiltration.
The second loan, through the Drinking Water Program, supports the replacement of approximately 2,800 linear feet of water main, 55 water service connections, and 3 fire hydrant assemblies. The existing system consists of undersized asbestos-cement, ductile iron, and cast-iron pipes, which are subject to corrosion. Service connections include a mix of polyethylene, lead, galvanized fittings, and some galvanized piping—all of which are being upgraded to improve water quality and system reliability.
