Hawthorne Township recently closed on a $6.6 million loan with the NJ Transportation Bank to mill and resurface various streets within the Borough. As part of the project, uneven manhole and inlet castings will be reset or reconstructed as needed, and outdated inlet grates and curb heads will be replaced with bicycle-safe, NJDEP-approved models. Existing trees that are damaging curbs, sidewalks, driveways, or the roadway will be removed and replaced, and new concrete curbing will be installed where necessary.
All non-compliant curb ramps within the project area will be removed and reconstructed in accordance with the latest Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards and New Jersey Department of Transportation (DOT) construction details. New concrete sidewalks and driveway aprons will be built to comply with the Public Rights-of-Way Accessibility Guidelines (PROWAG), which establish federal standards to ensure accessibility for individuals with disabilities in pedestrian areas within the public right-of-way.
Once paving is complete, new traffic striping and pavement markings will be installed in accordance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), a national standard that governs all traffic signs, signals, and pavement markings to ensure consistency and safety on public roadways.
By modernizing aging infrastructure and making key accessibility upgrades, the project will create a safer, smoother, and more inclusive environment for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers alike.
